Male Pattern Hair Loss

Also known as ‘Androgenetic Alopecia,’ male pattern hair loss is a common cause of hair loss in men. Studies have found that its occurrence is largely related to genetic factors and the level of a hormone called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

If either or both the paternal or maternal side of the family show signs of hair loss, the chance of a male inheriting male pattern hair loss is relatively high. However, even if someone in the family has hair loss, the age of onset, extent, and severity are not the same for everyone; so some people might not show signs of hair loss until later in life, mistakenly thinking they’ve escaped this fate.

Additionally, when too much Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), produced by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, accumulates in the scalp, it can affect the normal hair growth cycle. The hair becomes thin, sparse, and falls out until the follicle gradually atrophies and no new hair grows. The problem of hair loss becomes more severe when DHT continues to maintain high concentration levels.
