Keratosis pilaris

There are over a thousand entities in dermatology; it is difficult to understand all in just a few pages. We are going to describe a few common skin problems. This is purely educational; if you have a skin disease, please consult your dermatologist.

Keratosis pilaris (KP) is exceedingly common. 50-80% of adolescents and about 40% of adults have keratosis pilaris. 40% will have a family history. KP is due to an overgrowth of the top layer of our skin which clogs up our pores.

KP is often found on the outer edge of our upper arms, although they are also commonly found on our back and thighs. KP appear as multiple tiny raised bumps on our skin, they are sometimes pigmented, resembling goose-pimples.

KP does not affect our health. Many people seek treatment because of cosmetic reasons.

KP can be improved by chemical peels and topical medication. Keeping the skin supple is also important.
